Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Queen Henrietta Maria (1609–1669), after Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - London 1641), inscribed top right: Henretta De Bourbon / Queen of Charles / and inscribed top left: ...... HR [joined] / 1637. A three-quarter-length portrait, facing, gazing at the spectator, with short tightly-curled brown hair, double drop-pearl earrings, and a single strand pearl necklet. She wears an off-the-shoulder white silk dress with puff sleeves and an elaborate jewel at her breast together with a jewelled band hanging from her right shoulder crossing her waist and looped around the top of her left arm. This portrait is a version of the undated one in the Royal Collection which was purportedly painted as a guide for the sculptor Bernini.
Provenance
Acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
