Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Thomas Clifford, 1st Baron Clifford of Chudleigh KG (1630-1673) in Garter Robes by Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680), circa 1677. A three-quarter-length portrait turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, his left hand by his side, his right hand holding his Treasurer's Wand of Office, dressed in Garter robes, the background formed by a red drape to the far right, a stone pillar in the centre and a distant horizon on the left with a stormy sky. He was Lord Treasurer 1672. and a member of the Cabal. Versions by the artist are at Ugbrooke and Cirencester Park.
Provenance
In 1677 inventory and thence by descent until acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
