Summary
Oil painting on canvas, William Hamilton, 2nd Duke of Hamilton MP, PC, KG (1616-1651) by Cornelius Johnson (London 1593 - Utrecht 1661). Three-quarter-length portrait, of a man standing, turned slightly to the right, his left hand on his hip his right arm leaning on a stone ledge, brown, shoulder-lenth natural hair, wearing black with a simple linen collar and the blue ribbon of the garter, the badge of which is tucked under his right arm beneath his black cloak.
Provenance
Acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
