Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Lady Margaret Murray, Lady Maynard (c.1638-1682) by Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680), circa 1670. Inscribed in yellow script, top right (painted out): Lady Maynard. A three-quarter-length portrait of a woman, the youngest sister of the Duchess of Lauderdale, seated in a chair in an interior, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, her left hand rests on her lap and her right hand fingers a rose, she has tightly curled hair falling in ringlets on her shoulders, she is wearing an off-the-shoulder brown satin dress over a white chemise. A long red velvet curtain is pulled back to reveal a view through a window on the left, with a reddish sky.
Provenance
In 1683 inventory and thence by descent until acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
