Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Possibly Lady Katherine Murray (d.1669/70) by Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680), circa 1648-1650. Inscribed in yellow, top right: Ann Countess of Bedford [Anne Carr, Duchess of Bedford (1615-1684)]. Elizabeth, Countess of Dysart also had a sister callend Anne. A three-quarter-length portrait of a young woman, turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, her right hand resting against a table top, her left hand holding a grey scarf which is draped over her blue silk off-the-shoulder dress. She has blonde hair which fall in ringlets on her shoulders. Large stone pillar on a plinth to the left, shadows to the right.
Provenance
In 1677 inventory and thence by descent until acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
