Summary
Oil painting on copper, Desiderius Erasmus (1466?-1536), after Hans Holbein the younger (Augsburg 1497/8 - London 1543). A miniature half-length portrait of a man, turned to and looking to left, in a gown with a furred collar, and in a black cap. After a version now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York rather than the Earl of Radnor picture on loan to National Gallery, London.
Provenance
In 1683 valuation and thence by descent until acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
