Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Battlepiece (Battle of Vienna, 1683) by Jan Wyck (Haarlem 1645 – Mortlake 1700), signed: J Wyjk, 1683. Christian armies fighting the Turks. A mounted officer is centre left of the foreground, on a white rearing horse, he fires a pistol to the right of the scene; a dead Turk lies at the feet of the horse. The soldier on the dark horse on the left is apparently wearing Polish uniform. The battle is taking place outside Vienna; the mountains on the left are the Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg and the Danube can be seen on the right. Placed in-situ a year after the relief of Vienna.
