Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Battle Scene, in the manner of Jan Wyck (Haarlem 1645 – Mortlake 1700). Landscape with mounted Cavalier horsemen, one centre left points to the right of the scene with his sword, blue cloudy sky and far horizon.
Provenance
Bought by Lionel Tollemache, 4th Earl of Dysart KT (1708- 1770) as 'A Battle by Tillimans' for £1 10s, at Lord Cholmondeley's sale by auction, second day, 1748 and thence by descent; seen by Horace Walpole, 1770; acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
