Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Fra Paolo Sarpi (1552-1623), Italian School, circa 1600. Inscribed in gilt paint on the left: Concilii Tridentini Eviscerator. A painted oval half-length portrait of a member of the Council of Trent (1545), turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, short hair, small beard and moustache, wearing a blackmonastic gown. There are other versions at Montacute (NT) and the Bodleian Libary, Oxford and at Sherborne Castle, Dorset (Digby family).
Provenance
In 1683 valuation; acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
