Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Captain, The Hon. John Tollemache, RN (1744-1777), British (English) School, circa 1775/77. A half-length portrait of a young man, turned half-right, head turned slightly back and gazing at the spectator, standing, wearing naval captain’s uniform, with his right hand on his hip, and his left hand holding a tricorn hat, the forearm supported on a plinth on the right, in a dark interior.
Provenance
Presumably commissioned by the sitter or one of his siblings, and thence by family descent; first recorded 1844; acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
