Summary
One of three embroidered panels from ecclesiastical vestments worked in colours with metal threads with the Almighty and saints in architectural landscapes - 15th century. A fragment of an orphrey showing one scene, depicting a female figure with a halo facing upwards to the left, within an architectural setting. The embroidery is carried out in fine silk floss embroidery using long & short / split stitch, in greens, yellows, creams, blues with dark outlines. The background areas and cloak of the lady is carried out in laid goldthread secured in patterns with yellow silk thread. There are small details of raised work with padding of cord in the architecture. The figure is carried out in appliqué. Ground fabric - top layer: linen, approx. 14 threads p/cm. Ground fabric - under layer: linen, approx. 14-15 threads p/cm Appliqué fabric - top layer: linen, approx. 14 threads p/cm Appliqué fabric - under layer: linen, approx. 11 threads p/cm The reverse was once covered with paper backing.
