Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Lord George Augustus Henry Cavendish, 1st Earl of Burlington (1754-1834), British (English) School, possibly after Pompeo Batoni, allegedly painted by the sitter's cook. A three-quarter length portrait of a young man, standing, in a landscape, turned slightly to the left, head facing, leaning on the pedestal of a portrait bust statue, left, wearing a brown coat and white satin waistcoat. Carved gilt pine frame with trilobe pattern carved band around outside. Main moulding plain with dot and dash beading on inside. Twisted cylinder beading near inner edge.
Provenance
By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
