Caption
The Rev. Richard Smith was the Vicar of Edensor, near Chatsworth. He married Charlotte, daughter of Thos. Hyde of the Hudson’s Bay Company. He was with William Cavendish (1783-1812), the 7th Duke’s father (1808-1891), at the time of his fatal accident. Thomas Barber had a wide practice in the Midlands and the North of England, where most of his pictures remain.

A half-length portrait to right, head facing, wearing black gown with white bands. En suite with NT 1129249. The Reverend Richard Smith was Vicar of Edensor, near Chatsworth between 1804-37. He married Charlotte, daughter of Thomas Hyde, Esq. of the Hudson's Bay Company. He was with William Cavendish (1783-1812), the 7th Duke of Devonshire's father (1808-1891), at the time of his fatal accident.
Provenance
In 1845 Handbook of Hardwick Hall and in Louisa Cavendish's 1860 catalogue and thence by descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
