Richard Montagu was the second son of Edward Montagu, 2nd Earl of Sandwich (d.1689) and Anne Boyle (d.1671), who was the 4th daughter of Richard Boyle, Earl of Cork and Burlington.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Hon. Richard Montagu (1671-1697), school of Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723). A three-quarter-length portrait of a young man, almost facing, wearing a blue coat and red cloak, his right elbow resting on a ledge, his left hand on his hip.
Provenance
Lord Hawkesbury, Catalogue of the Pictures at Hardwick Hall; in the possession of the His Grace the Duke of Devonshire K.G. 1903; thence by inheritance until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
