Caption
This portrait was traditionally identified as Margaret Jones who was the eldest daughter of Arthur Jones, 2nd Viscount Ranelagh. It is, however, a partial and variant copy of the full-length of Lady Anne Cavendish, Lady Rich, by Van Dyck, that passed successively through the Wharton, Walpole and Wrest Park collections. Lady Anne was the daughter of William Cavendish, 2nd Earl of Devonshire (1590-1628) and Catherine Bruce (1595-1675). She married, in 1632, as his first wife, Robert, Lord Rich, later 3rd Earl of Warwick. She died when she was only twenty seven years old. Her untimely death was lamented in verses by Sidney Godolphin and Waller. A central theme in Waller’s poem was the friendship between Lady Rich and Lady Dorothy Sidney - ‘the lovely passion each to other bare’.
