Caption
William III was born at the Binnenhof Palace, The Hague, and was the son of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange (1626-1650) and Mary Henrietta Stuart (1631-1660), daughter of Charles I and Henrietta Maria. On 4th November, 1677, he married Princess Mary (1662-1694), daughter of James II (1633-1701) and Anne Hyde (1637-1671). He acceded to the throne of Great Britain as joint sovereign with his wife Mary (the rightful heir) on 13 February, 1689, following the Interregnum after the abdication and deposition of his father-in-law, James II. William was crowned on 11 April, 1689 at Westminster Abbey. He died on 8 March 1702 at Kensington Palace and was buried in Westminster Abbey. They had three children, all stillborn.

Provenance
In 1811 inventory; by descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
