Caption
Mary was the daughter James II (1633-1701) and Anne Hyde (1637-1671). She was proclaimed Queen of Great Britain on 13 February, 1689 following the deposition of her father and the Interregnum. She reigned as joint sovereign with her husband William III (1650-1702), with whom she was crowned on 11 April 1689. She died on 28 December 1694 at Kensington Palace, of smallpox and is buried in Westminster Abbey. She had three children, all stillborn

Oil painting on canvas, Queen Mary II (1662-1694), after Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723). Full-length portrait, turned to the left, gazing at spectator, wearing a richly embroidered dress and a grey cloak lined with ermine; her right hand resting on the orb, placed with the crown on a table at the left.
Provenance
In 1811 inventory; by descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
