Caption
The artist of this picture, Lady Dorothy Savile, Countess of Burlington, the mother of the two girls depicted here, was identified in the 1933 Devonshire Catalogue. The unprofessional nature of the work gives substance to this attribution. It is sustained by a small portrait of ‘Princess Amelia’ in the Devonshire Collection, signed D. Burlington. A very crude drawing of ‘Queen Caroline on her death-bed’ by her is also at Chatsworth Amongst a number of drawings by the Countess of Burlington of Lady Charlotte Boyle at Chatsworth, there are two that may have been drawn on for the present oil: one with a similar lace cap, albeit without flowers, and with a differently shaped ear; the other more broadly executed with a different cap and more childish face.
