Caption

The artist of this picture, Lady Dorothy Savile, Countess of Burlington, the mother of the two girls depicted here, was identified in the 1933 Devonshire Catalogue. The unprofessional nature of the work gives substance to this attribution. It is sustained by a small portrait of ‘Princess Amelia’ in the Devonshire Collection, signed D. Burlington. A very crude drawing of ‘Queen Caroline on her death-bed’ by her is also at Chatsworth Amongst a number of drawings by the Countess of Burlington of Lady Charlotte Boyle at Chatsworth, there are two that may have been drawn on for the present oil: one with a similar lace cap, albeit without flowers, and with a differently shaped ear; the other more broadly executed with a different cap and more childish face.

Summary

Oil painting on canvas, Lady Dorothy Boyle, Countess of Euston (1724 - 1742) and her sister Lady Charlotte Boyle, later Marchioness of Hartington (1731 - 1754) by Lady Dorothy Savile, Countess of Burlington and Countess of Cork (1699 - 1758). Inscribed top right in gold (Welbeck type, put on between 1748 & 1755): Lady Dorothy, and Lady Charlotte Boyle / Daughters to the Earl of Burlington / Married to the Earl of Euston / And the Marquiss of Hartington. Two three-quarter length portraits; Lady Dorothy, the elder sister, seated at the left looking inwards, wearing a pink dress with embroidered white sleeves, her right hand held to a dog; Lady Charlotte, as a child, by her side looking up at her, dressed in white; terrace background. Painted by the sitters' mother. Lady Charlotte married William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire (Marquess of Hartington) (1720 - 1764) and inherited the estate of Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington (1684 - 1753).

Provenance

By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
