Oil painting on canvas, Reputedly Richard Montagu or possibly Horatio Walpole, 2nd Lord Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford (1723 – 1809), British (English) School, circa 1748/50 An oval half-length portrait of a young man, torned to right, gazing at spectator, wearing a grey-green coat, white stock and pale green waistcoat embroidered with silver. If indeed it is this sitter, Horatio Walpole, 2nd Baron Walpole and 1st Earl Orford (3rd creation) (1723-1809) married in 1748 Rachel Cavendish, third daughter of William Cavendish, 3rd Duke of Devonshire (1698-1755) and Catherine Hoskins (d.1777); created Earl of Orford in 1806.
Provenance
In 1845 handbook of Chatsworth and Hardwick Hall; thence by inheritance until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
