Summary
Oil painting on canvas (oval), William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Devonshire, KG, PC (1640-1707) as a Youth by John Michael Wright (London 1617 - London 1694). An oval half- length portrait, turned to the right, gazing at spectator, wearing a red cloak with a red and gold sash with a buckle and white cravat. The bow of the necktie is an addition, inconsistent with the conventional form. Ginger-brown hair.
Provenance
In Agar-Ellis 1817 catalogue of Hardwick Hall; thence by inheritance until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
