Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Lord George Augustus Cavendish (1728-1794), attributed to Mather Brown (Boston 1761 – Twickenham 1831), 1794. Inscribed across top:The RT. HONBLE LD. GEO. CAVENDISH MDCCXCIV / Heu! prisca fides [Virgil's Aeneid Book VI.878; The Lament on Menelaus: "Heu pietas, heu prisca fides, invictaque bello Dextera." ("Alas for his piety! Alas for his old world honour and his right hand invincible in war")]. A half-length portrait, seated, looking over his left shoulder, wearing a brown coat with gold buttons, white vest and powdered hair, his left arm resting on a table. Landscape right.

In Agar-Ellis 1817 catalogue of Hardwick Hall; thence by inheritance until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
