Caption
Sir William Cavendish was the second son of Thomas Cavendish of Cavendish Overhall and Alice Smith. He acted as agent for Henry VIII in the dissolution of the monasteries, and was knighted in 1546. He married three times – his last wife being Bess of Harwick (c.1527-1608). There are two versions of this picture at Hardwick, of which this is the copy.

Inscribed, above left : Sr.WILLIAM / ÆTATIS and inscribed above right: CAVENDISH SUÆ. 44. A three-quarter length portrait, to left, bearded, in black cloak with large fur collar and black cap, his gloves held in his left hand.
Provenance
In 1786-92 Catalogue and thence by descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
