Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Colonel, Lord Charles Cavendish (1620-1643), after Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - London 1641). Inscribed top left: COLONEL CHARLES CAVENDISH / BROTHER TO THE 3rd EARL / OF DEVONSHIRE. A half-length portrait of the brother of the 3rd Earl of Devonshire, turned slightly to the left, gazing at spectator, wearing a buff slashed dress and white lace shoulder-collar, long dark curled hair falling over his left shoulder, grey-blue eyes. He was the second son of William, 2nd Earl of Devonshire, and Christian Bruce, his wife. He was Lieutenant-General of Horse to his cousin, William, Marquess (and afterwards Duke) of Newcastle. He was slain in the fight at Gainsborough, 31 July 1643, buried at Newark, whence his body was afterwards removed, and laid in the Cavendish vault in All Saints' Church, Derby, on the day of his mother's funeral, 18 February 1674.
Provenance
In 1786-1792 catalogue of Hardwick Hall; and thence by descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
