Caption
The identification with the duc d’Orleans, the brother of Louis XIV, is pure conjecture. This portrait cannot have been painted from life since the armour, which is datable to the 1660s, is incorrectly worn.

Oil painting on canvas, Reputedly Philippe, Duc d’Orleans (1640-1701), British (English) School, 18th century. A half-length portrait of a young man, turned slightly to the left, brown curled shoulder-length hair, wearing armour with white lace cravat tied with bow of black ribbon.
Provenance
In 1860 catalogue and thence by descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
