Caption
Charles Boyle, 3rd Earl of Cork and 2nd Earl of Burlington succeeded his grandfather, Richard Boyle, 2nd Earl of Cork and 1st Earl of Burlington (1612-1698), having previously inherited the barony of Clifford of Lanesborough from his father in 1694. He married Juliana Noel, daughter of the Hon. Henry Noel. His son, Richard Boyle, 4th Earl of Cork and 3rd Earl of Burlington (1694-1753), was the architect and builder of Chiswick House and gardens.

Oil painting on canvas, Charles Boyle, 3rd Earl of Cork and 2nd Earl of Burlington (c.1670 - 1704) by Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723), 1695. A three-quarter-length portrait, turned slightly to the left wearing long wig, grey coat and red cloak, his left hand held across his chest in his coat.
Provenance
In Swift 1811 inventory and thence by descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
