Caption
The 1st Duke is shown wearing garter robes, with a wand of office in his right hand. He was the son of William Cavendish, 3rd Earl of Devonshire (1617-1684) and Elizabeth Cecil (1619-1689). In 1694 he was crated Marquess of Hartington and Duke of Devonshire. He married, in 1662, Lady Mary Butler (1646-1710), daughter of James Butler, Duke of Ormonde (1610-1688), with whom he had four sons and one daughter. He was a supporter of William of Orange and was appointed Lord High Steward at his coronation.

The 1st Duke is shown wearing garter robes, with a wand of office in his right hand. He was the son of William Cavendish, 3rd Earl of Devonshire (1617-1684) and Elizabeth Cecil (1619-1689). Provenance
By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959.
