The sitter was the son of William Cavendish, 2nd Earl of Devonshire (1590-1628) and Christian Bruce (1595-1675). He succeeded his father on 30 June 1628, and married Lady Elizabeth Cecil, daughter of William Cecil, 2nd Earl of Salisbury. His daughter Ann Cavendish, married John Cecil, 5th Earl of Exeter and his son, William Cavendish (1640-1707) became 4th Earl of Devonshire (in 1694 was created 1st Duke of Devonshire).
