Summary
A mahogany-framed 'sleeping' chair, or library chair with adjustable back, English, mid-18th century, with straight back and low short arms, the back hinged by means of a metal lever at arm level. Raised on mahogany square-section legs with chamfered inside edge. The rear legs outswept. Upholstered in curled hair beneath a linen cover, and with later loose chintz cover patterned with carnations and sprigs of flowers.
Provenance
By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959.
