Summary
Oil painting on canvas, King Louis XIV, King of France (1638–1715) reviewing his Fleet at Dunkirk, met by Representatives of the City by Hendrik van Minderhout (Rotterdam 1632 – Antwerp 1696). Mazarin had been forced to give Dunkirk to England in return for aid against Spain, but Louis XIV bought it back again from Charles II in 1662, and made a ceremonial visit there to receive the thanks of the inhabitants.
Provenance
Recorded in the London house in 1761, but hung on the Staircase Corridor at Kedleston by 1802, and subsequently in the Family Corridor. Purchased in 1987 by the National Trust from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000).
