Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Landscape with Pastoral Figures and Animals( from Milton's 'L'Allegro') by Francesco Zuccarelli, RA (Pitigliano 1702 - Florence 1788), 1762. One of a pair. Though always thought of as Venetian, since he spent much of his life there, and his landcapes and figures have a bright, Venetian vivacity, Zuccarelli was a Florentine. This unusual choice of a Miltonic subject, albeit one particularly suited to his strengths as a painter, was presumably due to the lst Baron Scarsdale, for whom this picture and its pendant were painted in 1762.
Provenance
Painted for 1st Baron Scarsdale in 1762 and thence by descent until bought with part of the contents of Kedleston with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund in 1987 when the house and park were given to the National Trust by Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000)
