Summary
Oil painting on copper, The Visitation, by Alessandero Tiarini (Bologna 1577 - Bologna 1668). A square-framed octagonal picture depicting three full-length figures, left to right: elderly man (Zacharias), turned three-quarters to right, with grey hair and beard stands at the side of a balustrade at top of steps; young woman centre (Mary), stands, turned to right, head slightly bowed, right profile, wearing loose robes, string of pearls in her hair; to right, old woman (Elizabeth) standing, turned to left, left profile, her left hand on Mary’s right shoulder, dressed in loose robes with a shawl over her head and hanging down her shoulders, landscape and sky to the right. Tiarini spent seven years (1599-1606) with Passegnano at Florence before returning to Bologna. Major works in S. Domenico Bologna and Bologna Art Gallery. Recorded in the Withdrawing Room from 1771 onwards, attributed to Andrea del Sarto. This is understandable, since Tiarini's earliest training was in Florence, and it was only after his return to Bologna after 1606 that he came strongly under the influence of Lodovico Carracci
