Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Landscape with Soldiers under Trees, in the manner of Salvator Rosa (Arenella, Naples 1615 – Rome 1673), 17th century. Landscape with figures; large tree occupying centre and right, figures of soldiers on left, birds flying overhead, rocky landscape. A pastiche of the most popular king of picture produced by one of the favourite painters of the British in the 18th century.
Provenance
Recorded in the Wardrobe in 1770 as a copy of Salvator Rosa but no original is known; gifted to the National Trust in 1986 by Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000).
