Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Water flowing from the Rock struck by Moses, after Francesco Bassano the younger (Bassano del Grappa 1549 – Venice 1592), late 16th - early 17th century. At God's command Moses takes a rod and strikes water from a rock in order to save the children of Israel from dying of thirst in the wilderness. (Numbers 20:11 & Exodus 17: 1-7). A variant is in the depot of the Alte Pinakothek, Munich called: The Israelites drinking from Moses's stream. It was characteristic of all members of the Bassano family that they put the ostensible subjects of their pictures in the background, so as to concentrate upon the things that really delighted their patrons, the portrayal of ordinary rural life. Bought in a sale held by Dr Robert Bragge in 1755.
