Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Classical Ruins by William Hamilton RA (Chelsea 1751 – London 1801). A section of a monumental side wall of a roofless Roman building occupies the centre and right, a large block with niche, centre, is connected to a wall composed of Ionic pilasters between which are niches with carved panels above; a ruined arch occupies the left,; a woman on a horse with other figures and a flock of sheep(?) occupy the front of the centre, on the right are two seated females with a birdcage. One of a set of four paintings of classical ruins with figures.
Provenance
Overdoors recorded in Saloon by Bray in 1778; and thence by descent until purchased in 1987 by the National Trust from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000).
