Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Classical Ruins by William Hamilton RA (Chelsea 1751 – London 1801). One of a set of four paintings of classical ruins with figures in architectural ornate frames. To the left a monumental carved classical vase on a pedestal, some steps to the right; the centre and right is occupied by the ruins of a large Roman temple covered in foliage; the ruined walls in the centre support a large arch with an inset column, and various ornamented carved panels with scenes, through the arch can be seen a pillared roofless row of Corinthian columns under which is a tented awning with figures, under the arch in the foreground on the right are various figures some playing musical instruments, in the centre, three figures dance in front of a niche with carved figures, two figures and a child descend the steps on the left., behind the steps is a distant view of a classical bridge over a river.

Overdoors recorded in Saloon by Bray in 1778; and thence by descent until purchased in 1987 by the National Trust from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000).
