Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Classical Ruins by William Hamilton RA (Chelsea 1751 – London 1801). One of a set of four paintings of classical ruins with figures. To the left a large ruined Roman temple with Corinthian columns and an altar surmounted by a goddess seated on a lion; six women and a child are in attendance at the altar, one on her knees in front of the altar offers up a plate to the goddess, others, also with offerings are attending at a small lighted altar; to the distant right are the walls of a town with a ruined arch.
Provenance
Overdoors recorded in Saloon by Bray in 1778; and thence by descent until purchased in 1987 by the National Trust from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000).
