Summary
Oil painting on canvas (grisaille), The Judgement of Paris, British (English) School, 1759/69. A scene from 'The Iliad' by Homer. Paris proferring the prize of a golden apple to Aphrodite (Venus). Hera (Juno) had offered him imperial power, Athene (Minerva), victory in battle but Aphrodite offered him the love of the most beautiful woman in the world Helen, the wife of King Menelaus of Sparta. On the West side of Marble Hall.
Provenance
Recorded in the Hall by 1769; bought with part of the contents of Kedleston Hall with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) in 1986 when the house and park were given to the National Trust by Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000)
