Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Hon. Henry Curzon, later Admiral, The Hon. Henry Curzon (1765-1846) by William Hamilton RA (Chelsea 1751 – London 1801), signed and inscribed, bottom right: The Hon. Henry Curzon. 1787. A three-quarter-length portrait of a young man, in naval uniform, turned to left gazing at the spectator. His right hand resting on the hilt of his sword, his left hand tucked high into his waistcoat. Cloudy sky background. Son of the 1st Lord Scarsdale. William Hamilton’s forte was narrative and decorative painting rather than portraiture, but the Curzons clearly turned to him for everything. Henry was the fifth son of the lst Baron Scarsdale and rose to become an admiral.
