Summary
Cuirassier close helmet, c. 1585, complete with detached collar (DAL.A.1b) and gorget (DAL.A.1c). Leather straps replaced, 1992. Painted matt black and waxed. Helmet h. 31 cm; 12 in. Part of the collection of armour acquired by Colonel Edward Wadham of Millwood, a late 19th-century agent to the Duke of Buccleuch. The whole collection was bought by Wadham at a sale in London. Some of it was kept by Wadham at Millwood; the rest was hung on the wall of the staircase at Dalton Castle. The armour in the castle was given to the Trust by the Duke of Buccleuch in 1965. Some restoration was carried out, c. 1970, by Vickers Ltd (Shipbuilders) of Barrow-in-Furness. All pieces are said to have been mildly sandblasted and treated with coats of either clear varnish or grey paint.
Provenance
Part of the collection of armour acquired by Colonel Edward Wadham of Millwood, a late 19th-century agent to the Duke of Buccleuch. The whole collection was bought by Wadham at a sale in London. Some of it was kept by Wadham at Millwood; the rest was hung on the wall of the staircase at Dalton Castle. The armour in the castle was given to the Trust by the Duke of Buccleuch in 1965.
