Portrait miniature, watercolour painting on ivory, Arthur Ellis, British (English) School, c.1765. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a man, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a blue-grey coat. Brown eyes, dark brown hair in queue, fresh complexion coarsely modelled with brown stipple, aged about 25. Grey scumbled background, lit from the left. One of four Matthews miniatures, mounted together in black velvet. Arthur Ellis of Much March; father of (Elizabeth Matthews, nee Ellis, see SIZ.D.29)'; ; this picture is very similar to the oval portrait of Arthur Ellis, SIZ.P.43, and may have been copied from that. Father-in-law to SIZ.P.94.
