Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir Gerald, Strickland, 6th Count della Catena, 1st Baron Strickland of Sizergh GCMG (1861-1940) by Charles Julian Theodore Tharp (1878–1951), circa 1920. A seated portrait, with arms in top left corner. Son of Commander Walter Strickland. Sir Gerald was 1st and last Baron and 6th Count Della Catena. The eldest son of Cdr Walter Strickland, RN, and Louisa Bonici, through whom he inherited a Maltese title and estates. Becoming a colonial administrator, and ultimately Prime Minister of Malta, he was also an English MP, and was made in 1928 Baron Strickland of Sizergh, which he had rescued by acquiring it from his fourth cousin in 1896. Having no surviving sons, he settled it on his eldest daughter, Mary, wife of Henry Hornyold.
