Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Commander Walter Strickland, RN (1824-1867) by Giuseppe Cali (Valetta 1846 – Valetta 1930), signed on back of canvas 'G.Cali P. MALTA 1895'/ signed: G. Calì/1898. A three-quarter-length portrait in naval uniform, seated at desk, heraldic shield at top left corner. Walter was father of Sir Gerald Strickland and 5th son of Jarrard E Strickland of Loughlynn co. Roskinnon. The fifth son of Jarrard Edward Strickland, head of the junior line of the Stricklands of Sizergh, and Anne Cholmeley, but the eldest to have issue, which included Sir Gerald, Baron Strickland. His naval service included suppression of the slave trade off Africa, and in the Mediterranean and Baltic fleets. In 1858 he married in Malta Louisa Bonici (1833–1907), which began the family’s association with that island. This portrait is posthumous – probably painted from a carte-de-visite photograph.
