A walnut cabinet on chest, English, circa 1735. Topped by a moulded ogee-arched cornice above a pair of doors glazed with mirror plates above a pair of candle-slides. The doors enclosing an arrangement of small, short and long drawers. The lower section of four banded long drawers, the uppermost fitted as a secretaire drawer with fall-front enclosing a walnut-veneered writing surface and compartments and drawers, raised on possibly altered bun feet. All over decorated with herringbone inlay and banding. With brass handles. This piece of furniture is an unusual example of a cabinet enclosing drawers and compartments raised on a chest fitted with a secretaire drawer, rather than a bureau with hinged slope. It is very similar to an example illustrated by Adam Bowett and by William Old and John Ody who worked together between c. 1719 and 1733. Benjamin Goodison supplied a similar cabinet, described in his bill as 'a Walnuttree Cabinet with a large Glass in the Door and a Writing part to pull out and Drawers below it...' to the Royal Household in 1730.
Provenance
Given by Henry Hornyold Strickland (1890 – 1975) with Sizergh Castle and its estates in 1950.
