Full description
Flintlock sporting gun signed J. Jackson, English c1765. Probably Joseph Jackson, gunmaker, Fetter Lane, London c1744 – 1765. Iron barrel formed in two stages, octagonal to round, the forward section constructed with an under-rib with 2 ramrod pipes, and slightly swamped (flared) at the muzzle. Constructed with a false breech; the barrel tang engraved and formed with a sighting channel. The breech stamped with proof marks of the London Gunmakers Company, together with an unidentified mark. Bead foresight. Gold lined touch-hole. The metal rusted and covered with black paint. Retained to the stock by 2 barrel slides. Ramrod missing. Barrel length 92.5cm. Calibre 18mm. Walnut half-stock with chequered wrist and the butt of handrail-form. Raised apron with Rococo shell carving behind the barrel tang. The wood badly wormed. Engraved iron furniture comprising; buttplate, trigger guard with vase shaped finial, fore-end cap and 1 ramrod pipe. The metal rusted and covered with black paint. Flintlock of flat form, with stepped tail, the plate line engraved and signed in script form, J. JACKSON. Frizzen with large anti-friction roller on spring. The cock perhaps a contemporary replacement. Top-jaw and screw missing. Retained to the stock by 2 sidenails. The metal rusted and covered with black paint; the mechanism inoperable. Overall length: 132.5cm
