Summary
One of a pair of covered jars in blue and white porcelain, probably made in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, China, c. 1600. The body decorated in the kraak style (a Dutch term probably referring to the Portuguese ships, or caracca, which brought Chinese porcelain to Europe in the late 16th-century) with lobed and pointed cartouches containing images of flowers and rocks, linked by strapwork with lingzhi (magic fungus) motifs against a wan (swastika) ground, the shoulders and lid similarly decorated with cartouches with peaches, with foliate scroll around the neck and stylised leaf shapes around the base.
