Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Henry Rutson (1831 - 1920) by Harold Speed (1872 - 1957), signed and dated 1915. A three-quarter-length portrait of the sitter shown seated in an armchair. Henry Rutson was the second of three surviving sons of William Rutson (1791-1867) and his wife Charlotte Mary (1805-1881). William Rutson bought the Nunnington estate for £152,388 in 1839. Henry Rutson inherited Nunnington in 1906 at the age of 75. He was aged 84 when he sat for this portrait.
Provenance
Purchased by the National Trust by private treaty sale from the National Health Service (North Yorkshire and York Primary Care Trust) in July 2011. Prior to July 2011 the portrait hung on the staircase of The Rutson Hospital, Northallerton, which Henry Rutson endowed in 1905.
