Summary
Crewel work embroidery hanging, Jacobean inspired design, circa 17th century. Comprised of a till weave linen panel with a large stylised flower, worsted wool embroidery in various shades of blue and blue/green. The panel, which was cut from a larger piece, possibly a bed handing, is interlined with a tabby woven cotton fabric and lined with cotton sateen of a much later date. The panel is trimmed with a blue/green linen border of possibly the same date as the lining (1920s). There is Velcro® on the top edge for the hanging.
Provenance
Formerly on loan but purchased on 26th September 2008 from Mrs Mary Henry on behalf of the Clive Family.
