Full description
The identity of the sitter can be supported by comparing this likeness with the only other known image of Sir Rowland Winn, 5th baronet as captured in a joint portrait of him with his wife painted by Hugh Douglas Hamilton, also dated c.1767/8. (NT 960061). Ivory Registration: HME8HBCH.
Provenance
Probably created in London as a commission for the sitter, Sir Rowland Winn, 5th baronet of Nostell (1739-1785), possibly as a gift to his wife, Sabine Winn (1734-1798). Likely to be one of the “20 miniature portraits in oil on copper, panel etc” noted in 1806 and 1828 inventories for Nostell; passed by descent to Rowland Denys Winn, 4th Baron St Oswald of Nostell (1916-1984) who offered it for sale through Christies on 27.10.1964 (lot 10, illustrated), but withdrawn on the day; thence by descent to his brother, Derek Winn, 5th Baron St Oswald (1919-1999); sold to German art dealer Karin Henninger-Tavcar in 1990, probably by private sale; sold to a German collector at an unknown date. Exhibited (as “A Gentleman”) at the Philip Mould & Company gallery, London (John Smart; A Genius Magnified, 25th November to 9th December 2014, item 1); sold to a British collector who subsequently reframed the miniature in a more elaborate frame. Purchased by the National Trust for Nostell via The Limner Company in October 2023.
