Summary

A pen and ink exploded view of a design for an 'apothecary's shop', showing the ground-plan and wall scheme, attributed to Thomas Chippendale (1718 - 1779), circa 1775. Showing a fireplace wall flanked by a pair of cases, a door wall with a four-bay press or bookcase, and the wall opposite the fireplace with a large six-bay press or bookcase, the two end bays with arched door surrounds. A rectangular outline near the centre of the room believed to be NT 960400, a bespoke 'apothecary's counter' for which Chippendale invoiced Sir Rowland Winn on 6 May 1771. A memorandum of Sir Rowland's of topics to raise with Robert Adam, dated 3rd September 1766, includes 'A Room for an Apothecary's Shop'. It is not clear, however, whether the 'apothecary's shop' was ever built. The bookcases or presses which line the Muniment Room, although of a different overall design, contain similar pigeonholes and small drawers [see NT 959803.1 & .2 and NT 959804.1 & .2].

Provenance

Presumably acquired by Sir Rowland Winn, 5th Baronet (1739 - 1785), circa 1775 and thence by descent. Purchased as part of a collection of furniture and associated archive material by the National Trust in 1986 from the trustees of Rowland Winn, 4th Baron St Oswald (1918-1984), supported by a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
