Summary
An open armchair, one of a set of six open armchairs, part of a set of eight pieces of giltwood seat furniture, English, circa 1785 - 1795, attributed to Thomas Chippendale, the Younger (1749 - 1822). Also comprising a pair of sofas. All with bellflower and bead-carved moulded frame, outswept arms and fluted tapering square-section legs headed by patera, and with spade feet. Upholstered in eau-de-nil striped silk.
Provenance
Probably purchased by Sir Rowland Winn, 5th Baronet, and thence by descent until accepted by HM Treasury in lieu of death duties on the estate of Rowland Winn, 4th Baron Oswald (1916 - 1984), in 1986.
